Henny and Benny Bunyan and The Maple Syrup Adventure
“The Maple Syrup Adventure” stars brothers Henny and Benny Bunyan ~ distant relatives of the famous lumberjack Paul Bunyan, twice removed and once returned! They live ‘up north’ near the Great Pasty Mountains, and in this first story Henny wants to win the Whoopie Howdy Super Supreme Sled in the annual Pineville Flapjack Contest, but he puts wa-a-ay too much baking powder into his batter. Meanwhile, it’s such a hot spring day the maple sap is turning into maple syrup as soon as it comes out of the trees and Pineville may be in danger! See how Henny and his pals try to deal with this disaster. The book comes with a music CD with 5 songs about maple syrup and logging.
The 40-page soft cover book (and the first of the Northwoods Kids series) is illustrated by Michigan artist Lori Taylor (www.loritaylorart.com) and is for ages 5 to 12 and all young-at-heart adults, and in 2016 it won a Moonbeam Children’s Book Award. The book is also available as a gift package with the book & CD plus a wooden spoon and an unbreakable jug of Michigan maple syrup.

Bunyan and Banjoes
“Bunyan and Banjoes”(Thunder Bay Press Michigan) is Kitty’s collection of Michigan songs, most written by her in 1987 for Michigan’s 150th birthday. As well as containing some recipes and loads of information, most of the songs are charted out in simple notation. The songs cover a wide variety of topics, including rivers, maple syrup, the Mackinac Bridge, voyageurs, the pasty, cars, and much more. A perrenial teacher and parent favorite, the book comes with a 17 song CD.
“Every time my kids and I cross the Mackinac Bridge we put the CD on to that track and sing “The Mackinac Bridge” at the top of our lungs!” – Karrie Martin, teacher and mom

The Music
Since I’m a musician I wanted to include some songs with the book that tie into the theme of logging and maple syrup, and the music was performed by me and my friends Doug Berch, David Mosher and Len Wallace. There are 4 songs to sing along to and 1 French-Canadian tune that will keep your toes tapping. You can listen to a bit of the music here…
